causes of the cold war
Post World War II, political tensions were running high, but understandably so. On the Russian side, even though Americans fought with them, they'd joined the allied forces very late in the war, causing millions of Russian causalities. On the American side, Americans hated communism, the Russian leader Joseph Stalin and his totalitarian government.
So the Americans decide that their best option was their 'Containment' strategy. With it they planned to keep the Russian's expansion in Europe. Specifically, they planned to use nuclear weapons like the ones that ended World War II, which began the deadly 'arms race'. The Soviets built a atomic bomb of their own, so the Americans announced the start of building their 'Super bomb'. The arms race began what is officially known as the cold war, a political standoff that lasted approximately 45 years.
