Cuban missile crisis
Even though it only lasted 13 days, The Cuban Missile Crisis has a lasting impact on the world. It lead to the decline of America's hatred for the Soviets, and put in place several policies for Nuclear Weapons.
The Cuban Missile Crisis was when the Soviets moved their nuclear missiles to Cuba, which is only 90 miles away from Florida, one of America's southernmost states. American President John F. Kennedy, at the time, ordered a naval blockade around the coast of Cuba, and made very sure that the Soviet union knew that the Americans would not hesitate to use force to neutralize the threat on American peace.
No harm was ever caused to either side, and along with the rest the rest of the cold war, it was largely political. But it was an important part of American history, putting America and the rest of the war on the brink of nuclear war.
